This Season:
Diego’s offensive numbers could improve as newcomer Demon Brown offers assistance with the point guard duties ... his pure offensive numbers dipped as a junior but the savvy guard remained one of the top guards in C-USA ... an outstanding three-point shooter, Guevara ranks second all-time in three-pointers made and 19th all-time in scoring ... he should become the 16th 49er to surpass 1000 career points, this season ... Diego stamped himself on 49er folklore with his game-tying trey to usher in OT with top-ranked North Carolina in the NCAAs in ’98 and then hit another tying trey (his seventh of the game), with under 10 seconds to play in overtime against the Heels in Chapel Hill during the 1998-99 season.
1999-00:
Third on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg) with 2.6 rebounds and a team-high 4.03 assists (5th best in C-USA) ... point guard owned a 1.58 assist-turnover ratio (4th best in C-USA) ... Missed first four games following an emergency appendectomy (Nov. 20) but returned to score in double figures in 19 of 29 games with three 20-point efforts ... Hit a career-high 28 points (8-11 threes) in C-USA First round win over UAB to tie 49ers single-game school record for threes made and set C-USA Tournament record for threes made ... shares C-USA Tournament record for threes in all games (11) ... 25 points with a career-high nine assists in OT win at George Washington (hit 3-of-3 FT’s with 4 seconds left to force OT) ... 20 points (7-13 FG; 4-6 3FG) and eight assists against Rhode Island ... Matched his career-hi with nine assists and just one turnover vs. Old Dominion ... Ranks second all-time at UNC Charlotte with a .847 career FT% (All-time leader is Rod Howard - .878) ... Team-high .893 FT% (67-75) ... he made his first start of the season at Miami, scoring 14 points ... hit his first 15 free throws and had a mid-year string of 17 straight ... 1998-99:
The 49ers second leading scorer (12.5 ppg) who also handled the point ... scored 58% of his points (240 of 412) from behind the arc ... ranked first in C-USA with 80 threes made and third with a .388 three-point pct ... 80 threes are the fourth-most in school history ... shot .825 from the line (4th in C-USA) ... ranked third in C-USA with 3.79 assists per game and a 1.45 assist-turnover ratio ... hit seven treys for 21 points at #7/#6 North Carolina ... then career-high 24 points at Tulane ... had four games of 20 or more points, including 22 in home-opening win vs. Miami.
1997-98:
Less than five seconds remained when he calmly swished a three over an out-stretched Antawn Jamison to knot the score with #1 North Carolina in regulation at the NCAA East Regional ... led the team with a lofty .422 three-point pct. (38-of-90), including four-of-five in that season-high 16-point outing against UNC ... averaged 5.7 points, 1.5 assists and finished second on the club with 38 treys...Scored in double-figures in six games, including 14 at #17 Cincinnati (4-of-4 threes) and at DePaul...Added 13 against UMass... His .824 FT% ranked second on the team.
Venezuelan National Team:
(Summer, 1998)- One of the top signees in 49er history, he was compared favorably to some of the nation’s most sought after point guards...Some recruiting experts ranked the import in the Top 50 ... Led Venezuela to the Bronze Medal in the Carribbean World Games when he netted the game-winning free throws with no time left ...Led the club in assists, three-point shooting and free throw shooting. (1995-97)- Played with his country’s National Team and averaged 18.9 points and 5.6 assists against a major international tournament schedule... Rated a Top 20 Prospect by Bob Gibbons’ All-Star Sports.
Washington College (Tenn.) Academy:
Played one semester for coach Mike Szabo ... averaged 18.3 points on .583 shooting.
Redemption Academy (N.Y.):
Played one year (16.7 ppg) ... all-tournament at the Las Vegas All-Star Classic for erunners-up ... In the finals, he scored a tournament-best 32 against then-high school senior Michael Bibby on eight three-pointers.
