Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz has announced that Benny Moss, who lettered with the 49ers in 1990 and 1991, has been named to the third assistant position on his staff. Moss moves into the position vacated by Rob Moxley, who was promoted to one of the top two assistant positions.

"Benny Moss is the perfect person to join our staff, " Lutz said. "He is an honor graduate from the university. He played here and then for me at Pfeiffer and also worked with me, there. Benny has been an instrumental part of winning programs everywhere he has been. He can handle the myriad of duties necessary in this position including recruiting by telephone, scouting and coaching.

"Benny has the ability to work with the post and perimeter players and we are glad to have him come home to Charlotte. He completes one of the best young assistant coaching staffs in the country."

Moss has served under head coach Rand Chappell as an assistant coach at Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark. for the past two years and worked under Chappell at Phillips University in Enid, Okla. the previous two years. Henderson State went 47-18 in the last two years, winning the Gulf South Conference and GSC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history, both years. Prior to working under Chappell, Moss played and coached under Lutz at Pfeiffer University.

"You can't believe how excited I am. The opportunity to come home is unbelievable," said Moss. "I got into (coaching) with the sole purpose of coming back to Charlotte. I have a lot of love for UNC Charlotte and it's a dream come true for me to coach, there. Five years ago, when (Lutz left Pfeiffer and) went to UNC Charlotte as an assistant, I always hoped I 'd get to coach with him again. He's a good person, a tremendous individual and a great coach. I believe in coach Lutz being the ultimate winner. He's my mentor The opportunity to get back on staff with him is a dream come true."

A 1992 Business Graduate from UNC Charlotte, Moss received his Master's of Business Administration from Pfeiffer in 1994. As a player for the 49ers, Moss was named to the 1990 Sun Belt Conference all-Freshman team. He concluded his playing career under Lutz at Pfeiffer, where he earned academic all-America honors and was named to the 1992-93 Carolinas Conference All-Tournament team.

Moss then served as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer for three years, the first two of which came under Lutz. During those first two years, Pfeiffer went 50-14, won two conference titles, advanced to the NAIA National Tournament twice and finished as National Runner-Up in 1995. In his final year, Pfeiffer moved to NCAA Division II and compiled a 21-8 record and appeared in the top 25 poll.

Moss left Pfeiffer to join Chappell's staff at Phillips University in 1996. He spent two years with Chappell at Phillips before the two moved on to Henderson State in 1998.

"Benny's been with me for four years and he's done a tremendous job in every aspect of our program," Chappell said. "We went to four national touranments, won three conference championships and won 77% of our games during that time. He's just done a tremendous job and I know he'll do the same for coach Lutz and Charlotte, so you should be excited to have him."

"It's very tough leaving where I'm at," Moss noted. "Coach Chappell is a tremendous coach and the team we have assembled will have a special year. But it's a move I've got to make. This is where I've always wanted to be."
