As a collegian, Murphy was a four-year starter for the 49ers who posted a 73.52 career sroke average. He enjoyed a career-low 72.6 stroke average as a sophomore and helped the 49ers to top 10 NCAA finishes as a junior and senior. In 2007, as a junior, the 49ers tied for 3rd at the NCAA Championship and in 2008, Charlotte tied for 8th.

In his senior year, Murphy made a name for himself by qualifying for the PGA Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. Playing as an amateur, Murphy missed the cut by just two strokes.

Fall, 2007:
Had a 73.2 stroke average as Charlotte won each of its four stroke-play events ... -3, 209 to place 10th at the Scenic City Invite and a -4, 212 at the Pacific Invitational.

Summer, 2007:
Qualified fourth at the 2007 US Amateur, advancing to win his first round match ... won the Vermont Open and his third straight Vermont State Amateur ... reached the round of 16 at the North & South Amateur.

2006-07:
In the Niners' lineup in 13 of 14 events as Charotte placed 7th at the NCAA Regional and 3rd at the NCAA Championships ... carded a 73.5 stroke average over 40 rounds ... shot a +6, 286 at the NCAA Championships... was the 49ers top finisher in three events ... matched career-best with a -7, 209 at the Mattaponi Spring Shootout ... shot -1, 215 as the 49ers placed second at the Pacific Invitational.

Summer, 2006:
Won second straight Vermont State Amateur ... third at the New England Amateur ... first at the 2006 US Amateur sectional to advance to the US Amateur, missing match play playoff by one stroke ... shot a course record 62 at home course of St. Johnsbury.

2005-06:
Second on the 49ers with a career-low 72.6 stroke average as Charlotte captured the A-10 Championship, placed fifth at NCAA East Regional and placed 22nd in school's first trip to NCAA Championships ... under-par at three straight events (BYU Cougar Classic; A-10 Championships; Linger Longer) ... shot +4, 220 at both the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships to place 2nd for the 49ers at both events ... 9th at the Atlantic 10 Championship (-4, 212) ... won the 2006 Linger Longer Invitational (-5, 211), winning playoff vs. North Carolina's Martin Ureta ... shot -7, 209 at the BYU Cougar Classic ... Niners top finisher at season-opening Mid-Pines (-6, 210; 8th) as Charlotte won team title (earned A-10 Player of the Week honors) ... also under par at Wolverine Intercollegiate (-1, 212).

Summer, 2005:
Won the 2005 Vermont Amateur with a -6, 278 (71-69-68-70) ... low amateur (-3, 137) at 2005 Vermont Open (13th overall) ... 2nd at US Pub Links qualifier (67-72), 3rd at US Amateur qualifier (72-73) and 5th at the New England Amateur (66-72-75-69)

2004-05:
Played in 10 events; six of seven in spring ... +6, 222 in 49ers first-ever NCAA Regional appearance ... 74.9 stroke average for the year ... seven rounds of par or better ... best outing (+2, 218) helped Charlotte to runner-up finish at 2005 C-USA Championships.

At International Junior Golf Academy:
